The award scheme looks at the impact of new and converted buildings on both rural and urban settings and aims to highlight the contributions made by talented architects who are working within the Wessex and South West Regions or the Channel Islands. The Jury judges each building in its setting, considering fitness for purpose, consistency of design, use of materials and whether a building is likely to remain a fine work of architecture throughout and even beyond its full working life. Particular note is taken of the way in which schemes relate to their surroundings.

Award - Guernsey Airport Terminal, Guernsey

Kensington Taylor, Kensington Court, Pynes Hill, Exeter EX2 5TY

Tel: 01392 360338

The old terminal has served the public well over many years. However, as the number of passengers steadily increases and security measures inevitably become more stringent, the need for up-to-date technology allied to more space and better facilities becomes vital. Thus, the States of Guernsey commissioned a new Terminal to replace the old. The chosen architects' brief was to design a "statement" building that catered for a forecast increase of air traffic over a 25 year period, resulting in a new floor area of 6880 sq. metres. Also required were associated increases in car parking, bus services, improvements in taxi facilities, plus, of course, a fundamental requirement for the optimal number of aircraft stands.

Award - Applewood, Kemerton

David Pearson Architecture, Applewood, Kemerton, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 7SE Tel: 01386 725362

To reflect and contribute to the very special site, maximising the views and relationship with the open countryside.

The unifying design concept was the use of 'views' both internally in the house (i.e. corridors ending in display areas and the view from the kitchen across the external patio to the sitting area and open fire) and externally, both to ensure the fantastic rolling countryside could be a 'part' of the daily living experience and to ensure that the building would sit well within the rural context, using materials designed to mellow and meld with the rural palette.
