The Ibstock Downland Prize for Architects is awarded annually to a Chartered Architect based in the RIBA South Region (Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Oxfordshire) or in the RIBA South East Region (Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Guernsey) whose nominated building is considered to best demonstrate the value of using the skills of an architect in the design and execution of a low cost project.

The 2006 Awards have now been judged and the prizes will be awarded at a ceremony in September at RIBA, London.

The winners are:-

New summerhouse in grounds of Grade II* Listed building, New Alresford, Hampshire

A delightful, classically inspired, ‘giant apprentice-piece’ in a Grade II* setting, this new summerhouse demonstrates both a great eye for design detail and exceptional craftsmanship.

  • Winner, New Build

John Onken, 3s Architects LLP, Kingston upon Thames

Edmund Summer

Dolphin Cottage – a new house in the ‘old town’ of Cowes, Isle of Wight

The deliberately heavy ‘shed’ exterior encloses a ground floor of transparent living spaces, with the more private first floor rooms taking advantage of exceptional views

  • Winner, Sustainability

Daniel Harding, BBM Sustainable Design, Lewes

New house to accommodate blended family of up to ten people, on tiny footprint next to a railway viaduct in Lewes, East Sussex

Given an unpromisingly small brownfield site and a client brief for a family home for eight children, this four storey, environmentally friendly, town house has a Tardis-like quality. It uses every bit of available space to great effect – and with style.

  • Winner, Renovation

Lap Chan, Morgan Carn Partnership, Brighton

Simon Cudd

Remodelling and renovation of 1960s flat roofed house into fresh, contemporary home near Lewes, East Sussex

From a dull 1960’s flat roof house to an exciting contemporary home with ‘Wow factor’! Folding doors and raised terraces/decking link the internal spaces with the landscape, while openings in the external rendered screens frame the views.

  • Winner, Education

Daniel Wadsworth, Jessop and Cook Architects, Oxford

New Early Years building at Fritwell Church of England Primary School, Oxfordshire

A simple palette of materials - cedar cladding, dark buff brickwork and natural aluminium roof – combine with colourful pods to reflect the character of adjacent stone buildings and give a playful, human-scale feel to the building.

  • Winner, Historic Context:

Tony Mealing, Tebbot and Wells, High Wycombe

Toilet extension to St Nicholas’ Church, Hedsor, Bourne End, Buckinghamshire
