Ibstock Supply Bricks for a New Building at the University of Sussex
Fulton Building, University of Sussex
The original buildings on the Sussex University campus were designed by Sir Basil Spence and are now listed. When designing the buildings Spence wanted to make sure that both the look and the materials were sympathetic to the location, a theme that has remained consistent in the design of the new Fulton Building. The Fulton Building was designed so that it could sit alongside Spence's original Boiler house, and by placing it at right angles to the building it has created a new campus focal point, a lawned quadrangle hidden from the view of unsightly car parks.
The design of the building incorporates a new building next to an existing one. Brick was considered to be an integral part of the design approach as it would allow a seamless match between old and new. Ibstock were the favoured manufacturer primarily because of our ability to match new bricks to older, existing bricks. Due to the age and weathering of the existing buildings Ibstock created a unique blend so that the brickwork on the new building would match that on the existing buildings. Our Swanage Factory created a unique Swanage Falmer Blend which involved the architect and factory manager working closely and mixing percentages of certain bricks until the desired blend was achieved. Ibstock bricks have helped add an attractive aesthetic appeal to a major structural sheer wall, while remaining practical and environmentally responsible.
