Nutley Brown Multi Stock 0740

The Nutley Brown Multi Stock from West Hoathly is a traditional clamp-fired stock exhibiting a unique range of colour. Shades of brown are highlighted with distinctive spotting, characteristic of other popular West Hoathly products and not present on many of the stock bricks manufactured in more modern factories. The brick is aimed at builders looking to match up with buildings, primarily housing, in towns and villages throughout the South East. This brick extends the available colours not only at West Hoathly but also of the wider Ibstock stock brick range.

Jimmy Johnstone Memorial

Following the death of Jimmy Johnstone, one of Celtic's most famous players, in 2006 to Motor Neurone Syndrome, a memorial garden and statue were revealed on Sunday, 14th August 2011 at Uddingstone to honour 'the greatest ever Celt'. Jimmy's kit was auctioned and raised £7,000 which was donated to the Motor Neurone Charity on the day of the unveiling.

The memorial garden is the result of the generosity of many people. Ibstock, with its Tannochside factory & sales office only a short walk away from the garden, was more than happy to show support for one of Football's Greats. Working closely with a local contractor, our Scottish Design Advisor was able to advise on which brick to use together with the quantity of cut and bond bricks and specials. The garden features Ibstock's Staffordshire Slate Blue Smooth (2232) and Grainger Gold (2771) bricks with a number of Ibstock Kevington's Engraved Bricks.

Bideford Community College Bideford Community College Bideford Community College

Bideford Community College

Bideford Community College is a £45 million project delivered under the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme. The new college is attended by 1800 students between the ages of 11 to 18 and is the single largest investment to be made in the Bideford area. This contemporary design used Ibstock’s Staffordshire Slate Blue Smooth (2232) brick in both a standard size and a selection of special shaped bricks to create a modern and inspiring building.

Architectural Practice NPS provided full design and project management services for the scheme and during the process had to overcome a number of challenges. Not only did the college need to function as an educational establishment but it also needed to provide facilities for use by the community, including offering a range of after school activities, parenting support, access to ICT, sports and art facilities and adult learning.

Chailey Open Day

Ibstock’s Chailey factory is celebrating 300 years of brick-making this year and to mark the occasion Ibstock held a factory open day on the 10th August.

Guests for the day were varied and included, local architects, builders merchants, housebuilders, engineers, electricians and past Chailey employees. Throughout the day, guests were able to attend CPD seminars, have a go at making their own brick and join a factory tour where guests were shown the traditional clamp kiln, which was made more authentic by the packers who were dressed in traditional clothing.

In the evening an event was held for the local community who have a long standing interest in one of the oldest brick making factories still in production. With many of the employees living locally, the evening event was a real family occasion and guests were able to attend a factory tour, have specially brewed Chailey Ale, a bite to eat from the BBQ and not forgetting the bouncy castle, ball pit and popcorn stand that was hugely popular with children.

The event was well attended with those interested in brick making keen to visit one of only four factories in Europe that still use the traditional clamp method for firing bricks. This method still manages to compete with modern brick factories due to the unique appearance created by the firing method and the skill of the workforce which has been handed down from the previous generation of brick-makers.

With almost 200 guests attending during the day and a further 100 for the evening, the event was a huge success. We held a charity auction supporting St Peter & St James which is a hospice and continuing care centre that provides specialist care, love and support to those living with progressive life limiting illnesses in the East and West Sussex area.

We would like to thank all those that came along and showed their support and hope the event was enjoyable and informative.

CAD Team

CAD Team

With almost 100 years' experience in the building industry between them, Ibstock's in-house CAD Team are well placed to advise and offer solutions for problem areas on buildings. The CAD team's main role within the business is to draw special brick details, quantify special brick requirements and offer solutions where standard brick work may not be possible. This latter reason highlights the importance of getting the CAD team involved early on in the project which in turn can save a lot of time and money further down the line.

Kevin Tormey is the CAD Team Leader and between him and his team, they are able to flag up areas of concern so that they can be addressed quickly, give the customer a good idea on brick quantity and provide accurate drawings. The department uses the same format as most architects (AutoCAD) allowing them to liaise with the customer much more easily.

Our CAD department is bigger than any other brick manufacturer, allowing us to deal quickly and efficiently with all projects. The CAD department work alongside our five Design Advisors who will work on a project with an architect from the start. This ensures that the customer is likely to experience very few problems during the design stage and ensures a faster build time. This service is free to all of our customers.

The Environment

Taking care of the environment in which we operate is fundamental to Ibstock and we have a number of initiatives in place to ensure that we are being a responsible manufacturer. Wherever possible we try and reduce the amount of hazardous and non-hazardous waste that we have to send to landfill and since 2007 we have reduced the quantity by 39% and 37% respectively. This is partly due to increased awareness among staff and also as a result of innovations at some factories. Ibstock’s Dorket Head factory, located in Nottingham, has developed a technique for recycling spent limestone from the kiln exhaust gas scrubber which in turn reduces the amount that we have to send to landfill.

Restoring our worked out quarry sites and the land around them is something that we dedicate a lot of time to. In many instance the land is restored to even better conditions than it was in previously providing new habitats for plants and animals. At Ibstock’s Head Office in Leicester, we have restored a previous clay extraction site with the help of a stream diversion to create a fishing pond for the local community.

To allow us to continue to provide safe and nurturing habitats for plants and wildlife we are currently supporting a number of biodiversity projects including; four studies to investigate the presence of bats and one study to investigate the presence of badgers. We have relocated newts at Great Maltby Quarry, conducted a woodland development plan at our Chailey factory and we remain the guardians of sites containing rare Marsh Orchids.

Ibstock is leading the way when it comes to sustainability and our commitment to the environment is evident with all 20 of our factories achieving ISO 14001 for Environmental Management and BES 6001 for Responsible Sourcing.
